Cinematic piece, featuring piano and orchestra. A simple and traditional melancholic piano theme opens, juxtaposed by modern shrill electronic pulses to immediately give a sense of the unusual. It breaks into a lush orchestral theme with legato strings, rich brass and fast moving marimba, building in intensity to a majestic climax with fanfare brass and timpani hits. Not to last, it drops back to the orignial theme and calmer style to finish a piece that has a diverse landscape of emotions, evoking sadness, reflection, wonder and longing.

After the delicate intro of plucked harp, light piano and gentle vocal aahs, accentuated with legato violins, glockenspiel and woodwinds, the piece flourishes into a night time serenade of lush strings and sparkle. Dreamy and reflective in mood, it's the strings that take the lead with a little help from a subtle percussive shaker to add movement and flow as it transitions back to the innocent, child-like theme from the intro.

Equally dramatic and energetic as tense and mysterious, it makes great use of the percussive snare to destabilise and create uncertainty, overall never seemingly committing to a solid 4/4 beat. Panic sets in as you hurry to catch up, with too much to do in not enough time. Here it is in musical form - bright, spritely passages followed by startling realisation and fast paced xylophone and string runs, all mixed up with a sense of urgency in a dramatic and dynamic composition featuring the whole orchestra.

If I say 'pirates' and you think 'Caribbean', then we both know where this is heading. With more than a passing reference to a certain well-known theme, it's every bit as swashbuckling, unleashing the full power of a cinematic orchestra and its percussive ensemble. Having said that, it does have slightly less seafaring tendencies and could easily lend itself to many other action settings from thrillers to adventure scenes, given its generally sterner feel. Epic stuff.

A complex web of time signatures combines seamlessly to create an ever evolving, free flowing landscape for the rolling piano and pizzicato strings to colour in, all while keeping a light and uplifting tone to the music. Woodwinds add air and space, gentle percussion adds a touch of movement and magic, generating a peaceful background track that gives something a bit different.

Featuring the whole orchestra in a well constructed, well paced action sequence, it's full of percussive hits, fluttering tremolos, cascading wind runs, brass stabs and a whole pit of underlying menace.
