The title says 'News', but in truth, it's more than that. It certainly has a current affairs/political theme running through it, with its grand orchestral hits, tension-building ascensions, string ostinato, tremolo, percussive chimes and brass swells, but capturing such a cinematic dynamic opens it up to many other uses where a time-led intensity is required. Think James Bond on a deadline.

Starting gently with strings and horns, it gives an impression of mellow reflection which soon turns more sinister with the introduction of bolder brass and timpani. It turns once again, with solo violin making a yearning, mournful appearance over string ostinato before becoming more rock styled through a prominent electric bass line and percussive beat. Magical and mysterious in its gently flowing piano lines and shimmering high strings, it builds on the theme with faster string ostinato and legato melodies, gradually turning into a deeper, more epic interpretation with added brass, woodwind and percussion. Without limiting yourself to the fantasy genre as it works for many other situations, think more 'fairies and elves showing their powers' than 'horsemen of the apocalypse'.

A tense action epic. The title may be a bit misleading if you're expecting the classic John Williams score, but there's certainly dramatic tension and plenty of big screen atmosphere. Accentuated off-beat rhythms using percussion and strings, raspy brass swells and enhancing woodwinds all contribute to an edgy, pointed piece with a dark and sinister side.

Contemporary orchestral piece with a cartoonish side. You know when you wake up, and everything seems OK until you look at the clock? Panic sets in as you hurry to catch up, with too much to do in not enough time. Here it is in musical form - bright, spritely passages followed by startling realisation and fast paced xylophone and string runs, all mixed up with a sense of urgency in a dramatic and dynamic composition featuring the whole orchestra.

Cinematic piece, featuring piano and orchestra. A simple and traditional melancholic piano theme opens, juxtaposed by modern shrill electronic pulses to immediately give a sense of the unusual. It breaks into a lush orchestral theme with legato strings, rich brass and fast moving marimba, building in intensity to a majestic climax with fanfare brass and timpani hits. Not to last, it drops back to the orignial theme and calmer style to finish a piece that has a diverse landscape of emotions, evoking sadness, reflection, wonder and longing.
