A gentle, lilting start from the cor anglais grows into a more epic string theme, supported by brass and woodwinds until it finally breaks into the main motif - triumphant, romantic, grand and uplifting. A good mixture of string and woodwind shorts with sweeping string longs, and changes of pace and intensity help to keep the variety high throughout. Not to say it can't generate a level of epic befitting the holidays though - marching snare drum and faster string ostinato drive the piece forward, harp glissandi add fantasy elements, and a choir backing lifts the whole piece to a wholesome and fulfilling finale.
